Post Doctoral Research Fellow, Salisbury, UK
I am a post doctoral research fellow at the University of Exeter (UK) currently on secondment to the Defence Science and Technologies Laboratory (UK). I am part of a programme attempting to utilise high-throughput sequencing and random insertion transposon mutant libraries to indentify new drug targets.
I undertook my PhD as a collaboration between the Royal Veterinary College (London, UK) and the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (Surrey, UK). My work involved looking at how carrying resistance determinants affected the fitness of bacterial strains and developing new antisense silencing tools for functional studies of genes with a view to gaining insight into the persistence of resistance in the environment.
As an Antibiotic Action Champion, I hope to increase awareness of the need for research and development of new antimicrobials and contribute to the global realisation that this is not a problem for the future but one we are facing now.
