Head of Microbiology Diagnostics/School of Veterinary Science Liverpool, UK
Dorina Timofte is research associate and holds a tenured post in veterinary microbiology in the Liverpool School of Veterinary Science. Prior to 2004 she was an academic microbiologist in the Faculty of Veterinary Science Iasi, Romania where she currently holds a visiting professorship in clinical microbiology. In 2012 she was awarded an SGM international development fund grant for organising a workshop in Romania aimed at transferring knowledge and technology on ESBL and MRSA detection to diagnostic laboratories in Romania. Although Romania has one of the highest prevalence of MRSA and ESBL isolates in Europe (EARS report, 2010) diagnostic laboratories face numerous problems, one of the most important being the lack of proper antimicrobial resistance surveillance in local hospitals or at national level. This was the first time in Romania when human and veterinary microbiologists have met to discuss the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance.
