I’m currently a PhD student at the University of York studying bacterial biofilms. Biofilms occur when bacteria are growing attached to a surface coated in a ‘slime’ they make themselves.  Growing in this way they become more resistant to the action of antibiotics. Understanding how bacterial biofilms form / interact will potentially help in improving current antibiotic actions and developing new antibiotics.

In addition to my professional interest I am keenly aware from my personnel life of the importance of ensuring we work to preserve the usefulness of antibiotics. As my daughter was saved from dying from bacterial meningitis thanks to effective antibiotics being available.

I hope to use my interest in game design to contribute some fun and engaging outreach games to help spread the Antibiotic Action message.
