Antibiotics and You

Antibiotic Resistance (sometimes referred to as drug resistance) is a problem that affects us all. It is a complex, many-sided issue that needs to be tackled from a variety of different directions all at once, and on a global scale. This doesn’t mean, though, that you can’t make a difference and be part of the solution. We all need to do our part to slow the spread of resistance so that doctors can keep saving lives.

  • Understand the Problem

The first step to solving the problem is to understand why using antibiotics responsibly makes such a big difference by understanding the basic science of how resistance occurs.

  • To learn how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, skip ahead to 3:17.
  • To learn why it is so important to use antibiotics responsibly, skip ahead to 4:22.

2) Use Antibiotics Responsibly

There are many things that you can do every day to make sure that bacteria in your environment do not get the chance to become resistant to antibiotics:

  • Don’t ask and don’t expect antibiotics for colds, sore throats or flu – these are caused by viruses so antibiotics don’t work.
  • Only take antibiotics given to you by your doctor and EXACTLY as written on the bottle: take them at the times directed and always complete the full course.
  • Never give your antibiotics to other people.

3) Help spread awareness, not resistance

Help us raise awareness about this important issue! Educate your friends, family, and colleagues to make sure that they understand the importance of responsible antibiotic use.

Tweet, pin, post on facebook, or just plain talk to people to help us spread the word! Below are some pre-written posts that we would love for you to share. You can also ask your office, library, or local surgery to post one of our Antibiotic Action posters.

4) Get involved

Helping to raise awareness of the Antibiotic Action campaign can be done in many ways: Help us gain awareness of the urgent and important aims of the Antibiotic Action campaign by downloading these resources.
