As an academic researcher actively involved in novel antimicrobial development and antibiotic resistance mechanism projects I feel very strongly that the status quo regarding the funding, regulation and management of antimicrobial chemotherapy cannot persist.
The reduced investment from large pharmaceutical companies in antibiotic research, in part driven by increasingly expensive regulatory processes and the low cost market for antibiotics when compared with other pharmaceuticals, has amplified the need for all stakeholders, big pharma, biotech, clinicians, academics, governments and regulators, to take immediate action?
