WHO Updates List of Antibiotics Most Critical to Human Medicine

A World Health Organization (WHO) expert panel has updated the list of antibiotics that are considered to be most critically important to human health, and are therefore in need of stewardship. The list was published in Clinical Infectious Diseases on 20 July and is identified as a critical step for developing risk management strategies to control antimicrobial resistance from food animal production. The list, which is updated every other year, identifies fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins, carbapenems, macrolides and glycopeptides as highest priority for protection and stewardship efforts.
